America's Favorite Traditional Amusement Park since 1898, Kennywood is now open and perfect time to visit now that most schools are out ! Kennywood continues to delight each and every guest with 31 major rides, including three wooden coasters, two steel coasters including Phantom's Revenge and Skyrocket, water rides, spinning rides, hi-speed rides for thrill seekers, Kid-sized rides for tiny daredevils, and relaxing rides for those who simply want to enjoy the splendor of a truly inviting venue.
We have been visiting Kennywood for a couple years now, but this is the first time the grandparents joined us as well. They live in PA and surprised the kids by joining us at the park! They could not pass up the discounted rates! We normally go on Sundays and the park isn't too busy, this time we went on a Friday. The temperatures were hot, but the lines were not long!
It is about a 2 hour drive for us, from where we are located in Ohio. We had minimal wait times for rides, maxing out at 15 minutes! The first ride of our visits is always the Phantom Revenge Coaster, we are always in line and one of the first ones to ride!
Majority of the rides require you to be at least 46 inches and there are a few that you must be taller than that to ride. My son is about 48 inches, so he can ride just about all the rides he wanted! Since he was tall enough to ride without an adult, he even just rode rides with his sister, that gave the parents and grandparents time to rest.
My father in law, hubby and 10 year old daughter decided to hit the Black Widow right away. It was a first for all them, at first my daughter enjoyed it, but as she swung by a few times, I could see the look of fear in her eyes. Of course she will never admit it, but I do believe she was scared. That was a first for her, she is fearless! Black Widow guests will experience a one of a kind perspective of Lost Kennywood! Black Widow stands 90 feet tall but will reach a height of 146 feet in full swing. A total of 40 Riders will form a giant circle and experience the feeling of weightlessness coveted by thrill seekers.
Since it was so hot, the kids wanted to hit the water rides at the park. In the past they only had done the Log Jammer. On this trip the grandparents wanted to cool off as well and went on both the Log Jammer and the Raging Rapids! You will get wet on Raging Rapids! My daughter and Mother -in-law both were soaked, but loved every minute of it! Built on a natural, downward sloping hillside, the Raging Rapids simulates a white water raft trip. Waterfalls, geysers and even water guns from onlookers drench riders as they traverse the course down a beautiful river canyon.
It was a truly nice park for families. Younger children can enjoy the kiddie area and get the courage to ride the bigger rides. Nestled close to the kiddie area is also a stage, so check the times for the shows! New for this year is the 4-D theatrical Experience, Ice Age: No Time For Nuts 4-D.
This eye-popping adventure follows the manic saber-toothed squirrel Scrat on an epic odyssey in time-travel. From the Coliseum of Ancient Rome to the dance floor of Studio 54, Scrat survives everything from Excalibur to the Titanic as he chases after his beloved acorn that’s been accidentally lost in time. It was so cute and it was a bonus to chill in AC for 9 minutes!
Another change this year was Noah’s Ark! It has been a fixture in Kennywood Park for 90 years, but this year the big blue whale is back, after 20 years in exile.
If you have small kids, the Kiddyland part of the park will make you very happy. If you are a roller coaster enthusiast, there are tons of options for you. There is something for everyone! It was a fun filled day for us Ohio peeps and nice to have an option not to far away to visit.
