Carey
Mulligan stars as a headstrong Victorian beauty in this sweeping
romantic drama, based on the literary classic by Thomas Hardy. Mulligan
plays Bathsheba Everdene, an independent woman who attracts three
different suitors: a sheep farmer (Matthias Schoenaerts); a dashing
soldier (Tom Sturridge); and a prosperous, older bachelor (Michael
Sheen). This timeless story of Bathsheba’s passions explores the nature
of relationships, love and resilience.
I had never heard of this movie, let alone the book it was based on...but after reading a blurb about it, I could not wait to watch it. The movie focuses on Carey Mulligan's character "Bathsheba Everdene", she is an intelligent, independent woman
who seems to draw every man she meets attention. Since she is such a strong and independent woman, the men are not use to a feisty women like her and thus she has to choose among three suitors. We are first introduced to a sheep farmer named Gabriel who is immediately smitten with Bathsheba and proposes to her. Financial burdens and financial fortunes arise and the two part ways until they reconnect later. Another suitor is Mr. William Boldwood, a shy, well-established local businessman
who has deeper feeling for Bathsheba than she realizes and wants her to become Mr. Boldwold! The last suitor is a jerky (can you tell I dislike this character) is Sergeant Troy. He sweeps Bathsheba off her feet with romance and excitement...but he is not all he seems to be.
Who will she choose? I had me favorite picked out and was rooting for my suitor throughout the film. I won't give it away, but if you want a great movie that features a great cast and a heartwarming story, breathtaking scenery and a wonderful story, then you must check out this film!
