The Book of Like is an inspirational family story and is a great way to get the conversation started with the kids! Not only that, this is the perfect time to sit down with kids and discuss what you would like to achieve in the New Year! We hosted a movie night here at the house and had a couple friends over to spend the night. None of the kids had seen the movie, so they were glued to the screen. The basement was quiet until the movie ended and then excited chatter happened. Two of the girls had studied the Day of the Dead at school and said the movie portrayed some of the fun things they learned. It was great way to incorporate a lesson as well!
We loved the movie. The soundtrack was amazing, I loved Manolo's voice and his take on popular songs. He was also an amazing character, he made sacrifices, never forgot where he came from and always fought for what is important! Some of my favorite quotes came from the return of the mysterious Maria. "She is no natural", " She likes to read books for...fun", etc. Now of course the mean girls were trying to make fun of her, but Maria showed the girls you can be beautiful without make and it is okay to be a book nerd. Maria is such a strong character and willing to do anything for her family and her town!
We ate , did crafts, listed out our New Years Resolutions and watched the movie! To get ready for the party I got a little crafty. Take a look at my Pinterest board to get some inspiration for your own party!
A fun and easy decoration for the table is Book of Life themed lanterns. I took plastic cups and busted out the permanent markers and got creative. You really can't go wrong, just make a fun designed skull. Once it is done, place a battery operated tea light under it and instant candle!
Craft idea! I used a clearance set of foam skull necklaces I had left over from Halloween. I picked up bejeweled stickers for about $1 each at a couple different stores. The kit included string and foam stickers for eyes and nose.
The kids had a blast making their own skull necklaces. I am thankful the bejeweled stickers were only a $1 each, as it seemed my floor got jeweled too! I was surprised at how well they turned out and the creativity each child showed!
I also made a sundae bar for the kids and my hubby too! The kids challenged my hubby to an ice cream eating contest too...they lost. He is the master. LOL
Here are some recipe ideas for your own Book Of Life viewing party!
