Soon the snow will be sticking to the ground, black ice may be forming and we may be dealing with blowing and drifting snow. It is always best to take extreme precaution when driving in the winter. The winter gives us many more challenges then we normally would face day to day! Watch weather reports prior to heading out or before driving
in isolated areas. Delay trips when especially bad weather is expected.
If you must leave, let others know your route, destination and estimated
time of arrival. I always call my boss when I know I am going to be running late due to weather and an approximate location or arrival time!
- Always use your seat belt every time you get into your vehicle
- Decrease your speed and leave yourself plenty of room to stop. You should allow at least three times more space than usual between you and the car in front of you.
- Brake gently to avoid skidding. If your wheels start to lock up, ease off the brake.
- Turn on your lights to increase your visibility to other motorists. In Ohio your lights must be on any time you use your wipers! So if you are wiping the snow away, turn on those lights!
- Keep your lights and windshield clean.
- Use low gears to keep traction, especially on hills.
- Don't use cruise control or overdrive.
- Bridges& overpasses will freeze first. Use your judgement and go slow, you never know if black ice is ahead.
- Don't pass snow plows and sanding trucks.
- Keep at least half a tank of gasoline in your vehicle at all times.
- Don't turn corners too tightly.
