We are huge Scooby Doo fans.  Our son has Scooby stuffed animals, a Mystery machine lunch box that he totes his characters in, clothes, blanket, etc.  So when I was offered the opportunity to preview this volume, I jumped at the chance.  We had saw some of the episodes previously when they were on TV, but it was nice to get to watch them again. I love how all the shows we watched as kids, is now back and popular with our children.  Mystery Incorporated is just a revamped version of  the classic Scooby series!  So if  you are a fan of the classics, you will love this series!   Have yet to see any of the prior episodes, not to worry, jump on in on this DVD and you will fall in love with this show!   14 fun episodes complete this DVD, save them and watch over time or if your kids are like mine, con the babysitter into letting complete one DVD and start on the next!  I am just as hooked as the kids and look forward to these episodes.

Hot Pad Towel

Pair a hot pad with a pretty kitchen towel and the result is a useful kitchen accessory you can hang from a cupboard or drawer handle. They are quick and easy to make, match with your kitchen decor, make holiday themed ones, etc!

To make this a bargain, you can score 2 packs of the towels and 2 packs of the hot pads at Deals, Dollar Store, etc. for a $1 each! I actually bought a TON of towels last year from Kohls after the holiday season and scored them for $.17 each .  I have also been experimenting with different hot pads and bought some different shaped ones at IKEA for $1.49 a 2 pack.   This is definitely and easy and a bargain gift.

Materials

• One terrycloth kitchen towel (18-inch x 28-inch towel)
• One coordinating hot pad with loop on one side (6-1/2-inch square hot pad)
• One coordinating button that will fit through the loop on the hot pad (I just bought all wood natural ones at Wal-mart)
• Matching all-purpose thread
• Standard sewing supplies

Directions

1. Fold the hot pad in half with loop. Use an iron to crease the fold. Mark the ends of the fold with straight pins.
2. Fold the towel in half. Press with an iron to mark the fold. Open towel and run a hand-gathering stitch or machine gathering stitch along the fold (I used a machine and it goes so fast). Pull thread ends to gather the towel to fit the hot pad.
3. Place the opened towel on the opened hot pad with the gathered line of the towel on the pressed crease of the hot pad. Sew along gathering to attach towel to hot pad.
4. Sew button to edge side of the loop on hot pad. Button to hold hanging towel in place.
5. Hang towel from oven door, cabinet doors, etc!

I did not follow directions, just winged it.  LOL. Then a friend asked me for directions and I had none... So  these directions are derived from my noggin in combination with some I found on the web.

“Chicago” is a musical set in Chicago in the midst of Prohibition. The original Broadway production opened on June 1975 at the 46th Street Theater in New York City and ran for 936 performances. The West End production opened at the Cambridge Theater in London on April 1979 and ran for 600 performances. In December, 2002, the film adaptation directed and choreographed by Rob Marshall and starred Renee Zellweger, Catherine Zeta –Jones and Richard Gere opened theatrically and went on to win six Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Supporting Actress for Zeta-Jones.

“Driving Miss Daisy” – Winner of four Academy Awards in 1990, including Best Picture and Best Actress for Jessica Tandy

"Driving Miss Daisy” tells the story of an old Jewish woman and her African-American chauffer and how their relationship progresses in the 1950s American South. It made its debut off-Broadway on April 1987 at Playwrights Horizons in New York City. A year later, the production opened in London’s West End at the Apollo Theater. The production went on to Broadway with James Earl Jones and Vanessa Redgrave in the starring roles on October 2010 at the John Golden Theater in New York City. Colman’s Mustard Spiced Chocolate Cookies

Mustard in cookies! Who would of thought?  Colman’s Mustard adds a unique kick to everyday family favorites and special occasion gourmet cuisine alike, whether cooked with pork, poultry or seafood or added to sauces, salad dressings and soups. It even brings its distinct flavor to desserts and baked goodies, like Spiced Chocolate Cookies (recipe below). As a bonus, this fiery product is kosher and free of fat and cholesterol.

Chocolate Spice Cookies

Ingredients

3 oz unsweetened chocolate

1 ¼ cups all-purpose flour 
2 tablespoons of Heavy Cream 

1 tsp. baking powder

½ tsp cinnamon

½ cup butter, softened

2/3 cups granulated sugar

1 egg, at room temperature

1 ½ Colman’s Original Prepared Mustard

Directions

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees.

Melt the chocolate in a small saucepan over low heat, and set aside.

Sift together the flour, baking powder, cinnamon, and set aside.

Using an electric mixer, cream together butter, sugar, chocolate and the egg and beat well.

Dissolve the Colman’s Original Prepared Mustard and heavy cream and add to the chocolate mixture.

On the lowest setting, fold in the sifted flour mixture.

Divide the dough in half.  Place each half on a sheet of waxed paper and form into a 10-inch strip

Using the waxed paper to help, lift and roll each strip into a 10-inch cylinder

Wrap each cylinder in the waxed paper, twisting the ends to secure

Chill for 2 hours

Slice in ¾ inch rounds

Roll in sugar

Bake for 15-20 minutes

Cool and enjoy!

Cooking healthy meals with your kids #BensBeginners

With such busy schedules, families are constantly challenged to find enough quality time to spend together. Just last night my 6 year old daughter and I were in the kitchen making dinner together!   Both my 6 year old and 4 year old have been helping me in the kitchen since they could sit up on their own!   They love it and it helps them to learn about food and the process of making it!

Here are some of my tips for cooking with kids!

•  Safety First. With hot cooking surfaces, hot dishes, and sharp utensils, make sure you go over the ground rules first!  I recently had a bad burn on a finger that blistered, just by showing my kids what can happen if they touch something hot, I think they learned a valuable lesson!
• Cooking with a child should be a positive experience for the both of you!  So make it fun!  I bought  both my kids their own aprons, and they love to get "all dressed" up to help.  
• Make it educational! In the summer we have two raised gardens and the kids help with them.  They help from planting, to watering, to picking the veggies and then ultimately help mommy or daddy in the kitchen cook them!
• Let the kids help plan the meals!   Granted most the time the answers you will get from my 6 year old is Mac n' Cheese, but  it they are the ones helping decide on what's for dinner, then there is not noses turning up at the table!
• Take a simple ingredient like rice and show your kids how many options you can have with just one ingredient! Serve rice with curry chicken (a favorite in my house), stir-fry, with Mexican or in a soup!.  You can create a healthy, well balanced meals that everyone loves.
• Make it healthy!  It you start young serving foods like rice, meat, fruit and veggies, it will help your kids understand the value of healthy foods.  Granted a fast food break isn't so bad once in while, but if that is all you serve to your kids, your kids are missing out on key nutrients their little bodies need!
• Crock-pot cooking. You can seriously have an entire dinner made with little effort and little time! Teach your kids how they can add rice, chicken and veggies to a crock pot in the morning and have a meal made in no time! Perfect meal for a family that is always on the go. Plus this will be great knowledge for them later if mom and dad work late, they could easily dump all the ingredients in the pot and in a couple hours have a healthy dinner made and not reaching for a microwave meal!

I was not familiar with this movie until recently, so I did not go into it expecting much! I honestly had no idea The Big Year's plot centered around bird-watching.  With a cast that includes Steve Martin, Jack Black and Owen Wilson, who can resist?   It was  so much better than I expected and definitely worth seeing. The acting was great and the plot was well thought out. Not only is about competing to find the most birds,  it is about obsessions and how it affects their personal lives. I feel this is an underrated film and a good watch!
