10 + tips for keeping your family safe on the road

With summer around the corner, families are getting ready for lots of car travel and vacations. Whether heading to the grandparents’ house or camping in the woods, summertime is full of fun trips and activities.

Some of our fondest family memories are created during family road trips. I remember traveling in the full sized van that had the wood table in the middle and my brother and I would play games on it!   I would also read books,  play the license plate game, etc. Well times have changed and so had car safety!  But before you head out on some great family adventures and spend a lot of time in the car, it’s important to consider the role your windshield plays in safe driving.

Did you know that most automotive safety experts rank the windshield as a vehicle’s third most important safety component behind seatbelts and airbags? A properly installed windshield ensures the passenger-side airbag deploys properly and helps maintain a vehicle’s structural integrity in the event of a rollover. An improperly installed windshield could pop out during an accident. Without the windshield, a passenger can be thrown from the vehicle or struck by its collapsing roof - greatly increasing the chance of injury or death.

10 + tips for keeping your family safe on the road:
1.      Make sure your vehicle is in tip-top road-safe condition before you head out!  Get an oil change, make sure all your fluids are full, check your tire pressure, etc.
2.       Buckle up!  Make sure you are wearing your seat belt at all times while on a road trip and if you have car seats, make sure they are properly installed!  Some local fire departments and or police departments offer free car seat inspections!
3.      Put the cell phone away!   Do not text, surf the web, etc. while driving!  The calls and messages can wait till you make a pit stop.
4.      Always carry a first aid kit and auto kit (a jack, jumper cables, flash light etc.), hopefully you will never need these items, but it is always better to be safe!
5.      If you have kids, snacks, water bottles and some activities to keep them busy is always a must.  We have some seek and find books and magna doodles, just for this purpose!
6.      Maps, GPS system, etc.   Do I need to say anymore?  A driver who knows where they are going is more confident and less likely to get upset while driving!
7.      Make sure you know where you proof of car insurance and any important documents are!
8.      Watch your speed!  Make sure you are mindful of the speed limits!
9.      If you are using your wipers, then you should have your headlights on!
10.  Think you can ignore a chip in your windshield? Think again! The windshield provides up to 30% of your vehicles structural integrity, and a chip smaller than 6 inches (or the size of a dollar bill) can easily be repaired by filling it with a special resin.
11.  A chip could turn into a crack at any time, often when you are least expecting it. Windshield repair is often a safe and economical alternative to a full windshield replacement.
12.  Scheduling a windshield chip repair is easy! Companies like Safelite AutoGlass provide mobile service – wherever your car is – often within 24 hours of your initial call.
