In addition to the daily and monthly cardmember prizes awarded through the “Everyday Giveaway,”
(more info below) Discover just announced it will award $25,000 to one public school in
the U.S., chosen entirely by consumer votes. The “School Giveaway”
contest kicked off today and invites all Facebook users (must be 18 or
older; do not have to be a Discover cardmember) to nominate their
favorite public school to win $25,000.
To nominate your school, simply visit www.facebook.com/Discover and click on the “School Giveaway” tab. In less than a minute you can sign up and nominate your school; users can vote each day through April 30. Discover will announce the winning school shortly after voting has closed.

You may be wondering why Discover chose public schools as the recipients for the $25,000 monthly prizes. Last year Discover asked their cardmembers what they would do if they won the $1 million Everyday Giveaway grand prize. Many responses focused on charitable causes and philanthropic efforts, with an emphasis on education. In response, Discover added this new prize structure to help cardmembers realize their charitable aspirations. Also, Discover believes strongly in giving back to the community and has a long-standing tradition of supporting public education. While all educational efforts are important, public education is available to all, which is why the company has chosen to support it. Charter schools are considered public schools, so they are also eligible to receive the $25,000 award.
Discover's “Discover Everyday Giveaway” is back in 2011 after a successful inaugural year with more
prizes, more chances to win, and the opportunity to give back to public
schools. With every purchase made using a
Discover card (see sweepstakes rules for a list of participating
issuers) from now through the end of 2011, cardmembers are automatically
entered for a chance to win one of 150 daily prizes; a monthly prize of
$25,000, which Discover will match with a $25,000 donation to a public
school of the winner’s choosing; and a grand prize of $1 million.
Throughout
the year, cardmembers automatically will earn extra sweepstakes entries
simply by using their Discover card in featured categories. Now
through April 30, for example, cardmembers will receive 10 automatic
entries for every purchase they make at grocery and drug stores.
“This
year’s sweepstakes is bigger and better than ever, and by simply using
their Discover cards, consumers will have a chance to win significant
daily and monthly prizes, not to mention the $1 million grand prize,”
said Sarah Alter, vice president of portfolio marketing at Discover.
Every
day this year, 150 winners will be chosen to receive a $25 Discover
Gift Card. This equals over 54,000 daily prize winners, all of whom
will be notified of their winnings by phone and mail. One monthly
winner will be chosen randomly to receive $25,000, which Discover will
match as a donation to a public school of the winner’s choosing. In
early 2012, one lucky winner will be chosen randomly for the $1 million
grand prize in cash.
Alter
continued: “We believe supporting education is critical, and by
donating to a public school each month, Discover is doing its part to
help people build a brighter financial future. We know consumers will
appreciate not only the great prizes we’re offering with this
sweepstakes, but also the chance to make a difference with public
schools across the country.”
There
is no purchase, transaction or card application necessary to enter or
win. For sweepstakes rules, terms and conditions, and the list of
